Women’s volleyball completes three-match sweep at IWU tourney

Lauren Jackson

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Earlham College women's volleyball team completed a memorable weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan Holiday Inn Express Classic II tournament, posting five-set victories over both the host Titans and Lakeland College on Saturday at the Shirk Center.

The Quakers knocked off Illinois Wesleyan, 17-25, 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 15-3, to open the day, and wrapped things up with a 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 15-8 triumph over Lakeland that included a second milestone for senior setter Lauren Jackson.

Jackson recorded 61 assists in the win over the Muskies, tying the Earlham single match record for most assists by equaling the 61 assists charted by Amanda Prewitt in a 2007 match with Allegheny College. The milestone also allowed Jackson to attach her name to the only remaining assists record that Jackson did not tie or eclipse during her four years in Maroon and White.

With Jackson running the offense at a .255 clip, sophomore Caroline Mulvihill paced the Quakers with 27 kills on 79 swings with just four errors – a .291 hitting percentage for the match. Sophomore Sarah Dickman charted 20 kills on 55 attacks, while junior Julia Stewart had 17 kills to go with 17 digs.

Five players had double-digit dig totals, led by senior Sydney Ameluxen and first year Erin Wagner with 18 apiece. Wagner also served up four of Earlham's 11 service aces against Lakeland.

Lakeland outhit Earlham with a .302 attack percentage, led by Shannon Bishop's 21 kills on 61 attacks with one error. The Muskies finished up with 8.0 total blocks, led by Erin Iwanski's five block assists and one solo block.

In the day's opening match, it was Mulvihill who again led Earlham with 27 kills on 79 swings for a .291 hitting percentage, and also turned up 15 digs. Dickman charted 14 terminations. Ameluxen paced the Quakers defensively with 21 digs, while newcomer Jennifer Shamel tallied 20 digs.

Illinois Wesleyan, who finished the 2018 season in an NCAA Regional final and ranked no. 10 in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association poll but who have struggled to an 0-11 start in 2019, were led by Grace Sanders with 10 kills. The Titans hit just .178 for the match, including 29 attack errors. Amber Juarez turned up 25 digs for Illinois Wesleyan.

Earlham volleyball returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 26, when it travels to Ada, Ohio, to face Ohio Northern. Match start time is 7:00 p.m.
