RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College volleyball team battled Bluffton University to a 25-11, 25-15, 25-19 loss to open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play at Schuckman Court on Wednesday.
The Quakers started the match on fire winning five of the first six points using two kills from sophomore Skylar Muckway. The Beavers, who won the 2015 HCAC Tournament championship, won 20 of the next 25 points to take the first set.
In the second set, Earlham trailed Bluffton by just a single point at 16-15 midway through the second set, but again the Beavers pulled away winning the final ten points of the set.
The third set was the closest of the match as Earlham took a 13-12 lead on a kill from senior Kyra Williams. A small 5-1 run for the Beavers proved to be enough as Bluffton closed out the set and the match with a kill from Carley Lester.
Earlham finished the match with 30 kills and 29 errors for a.008 attack percentage. Muckway led the Quakers with 13 kills and sophomore Ashleigh Burton added eight. The Beavers, who had only eight attack errors the whole match, finished with a.305 attack percentage. Lauren Weisbarger led the Beavers with 11 kills on 19 swings individually.
The Quakers will travel to Franklin College for a tri-match with the host Grizzlies and Fontbonne University on Saturday.
