RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College women's tennis team continues Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play when the Quakers travel to Defiance College for a 4:30 p.m. match on Wednesday.
The Teams: Earlham and Defiance. The Quakers are 0-10 this season including 0-3 in HCAC play after falling to Transylvania 9-0 last Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets are 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the HCAC after a 7-2 loss to Transylvania and a 9-0 loss to Manchester College.
The Coaches: Earlham is under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hyden. A graduate of the University of Mount Union, Hyden comes to Earlham from Arcadia University (Pa.) where he spent the last three years as head men's and women's tennis coach. At Arcadia, Hyden led the men's team to a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament Championship match. The Yellow Jackets are coached by Tyler Ault. Ault is in his fourth season as the head coach the tennis team at Defiance.
The Players: Sophomores Chloe Culler (fourth singles at Adrian) and Robyn Thomas (fifth singles vs. Berea and sixth singles vs. Indiana Tech) have each won singles flights for the Quakers this season. Hannah Hesterman and Cayla walker each have two singles victories for Defiance.
Recent History: Last year was the first year Earlham had lost to Defiance. Before that, the Quakers beat the Yellow Jackets six straight years.
