DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College outscored the Earlham College women's basketball team 23-13 in the second quarter and held on for a 62-59 win in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday evening.
Defiance (7-7, 4-3 HCAC) hit its first four shots from the field and led 10-4 two minutes into the game. Earlham responded with an 11-3 run capped by a three-pointer from freshman Camryn White to take a 15-13 lead with 2:42 to play in the first quarter. After both teams hit a pair of free throws, Keri Conine connected on the quarter's final jumper with 41 seconds left.
With the game tied 17-17, the Yellow Jackets scored 23 of the game's next 34 points to lead 40-26 with a minute to play in the first half. Consecutive jumpers from senior Lexi McFarland put Earlham down ten points at halftime.
The Quakers defense stepped up in the third quarter, holding Defiance to just four points through the first eight minutes. Earlham scored 15 points during that time, and after a jumper from White, the Quaker found themselves leading 45-44. Defiance held Earlham scoreless for the final two minutes and ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run.
Trailing by five, Earlham immediately tied the game 50-50 on a layup from senior Maya Luney. Six minutes later, two White free throws put the Quakers up a point once again, 56-55 with 2:48 to play.
Defiance responded with a three-pointer and a jumper on its next two possessions. Trailing 60-56, the Quakers failed to score until a three-pointer from senior Hannah Franklin went through with just four seconds to play. A free throw from Kelsey Tietje sealed the Yellow Jacket win.
Junior Mariah Flynn led Earlham in scoring with a season-high 13 points. Luney turned in her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while White also had 10 points. Lexi McFarland finished with nine points and a season-high four assists.
Tiejte, who came in leading both Defiance and the HCAC in scoring (21 PPG) and rebounding (14 RPG), was held to 12 points and nine rebounds in the game. Ashley Williams finished with 11 points while three other Yellow Jackets had 10.
The Quakers shot 46 percent from the field compared to 31.3 for the Yellow Jackets. Earlham also won the rebounding battle 39-37, but committed 21 turnovers while Defiance had just nine.
Earlham returns to action on Saturday at Mount St. Joseph University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
