RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College women's basketball team hits the road Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Defiance College.
The Teams: Earlham and Defiance. The Quakers, who scored a season-high 74 points on Saturday, are in search of a win after falling 85-74 to Hanover College. The Yellow Jackets stand at 6-7 overall and an even 3-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play after a 70-50 loss to Transylvania University last weekend.
The Coaches: Janel Iden is his her fifth season with the Earlham women's basketball program including her second as head coach. She previously served the program as acting head coach for the 2014-15 season and an assistant coach for the two years prior. Before arriving at Earlham, Iden spent three years as an assistant coach at Mount Union. The Purple Raiders went 80-11 and appeared in three NCAA Division III Tournaments during that time. Jessica Morris, who has guided Defiance to four consecutive HCAC Tournament appearances, is in her fifth season as the Yellow Jackets' head coach.
The Players: Senior Hannah Franklin (12.5 PPG) and freshman Shannon Pittman (10.6 PPG) both average double digits in scoring to lead the Quakers offensively. Beyond that, junior Mariah Flynn and freshman Camryn White both score over five points per game. The senior post combination of Maya Luney and Shania Feathers grab over 10 rebounds per game. Franklin leads the squad in assists at 2.9 per game. Kelsey Tietje leads both Defiance and the HCAC in points per game (21.1) and rebounds per game (14.2). The senior has led the Yellow Jackets in scoring all but one game this season and led the squad in rebounding all 13 contests. Ashley Williams and Mekai White both average double figures in scoring.

2015-16 Matchups: Both teams won at home last season. Earlham defeated Defiance 69-56 in Richmond on Jan. 13, 2016, but the Yellow Jackets returned the favor with an 81-70 win over the Quakers in Defiance three weeks later.
Recent History: Earlham is 3-9 against Defiance since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010-11 season. The teams have split the previous three seasons.
