RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College women's basketball team concludes non-conference play and the calendar year at the Smokey Ballenger Classic hosted by Otterbein University on Dec. 29-30.
The Classic: Earlham will face the host Cardinals at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, followed by Albion College at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30.
The Teams: Earlham, Otterbein, and Albion. The Quakers are in search of their first win after narrowly falling to Wittenberg University on Dec. 20. The Cardinals are 4-5 after falling 81-66 to Muskingum University in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Dec. 20. The Britons are 6-3 following a 78-71 loss at No. 7 Hope College on Dec. 21.
The Coaches: Janel Iden is his her fifth season with the Earlham women's basketball program including her second as head coach. She previously served the program as acting head coach for the 2014-15 season and an assistant coach for the two years prior. Before arriving at Earlham, Iden spent three years as an assistant coach at Mount Union. The Purple Raiders went 80-11 and appeared in three NCAA Division III Tournaments during that time. Connie Richardson is in her 26th season leading Otterbein while Doreen Carden is in her 16th season at the helm of Albion's women's basketball program.
The Players: Senior Hannah Franklin (13.3 PPG) and freshman Shannon Pittman (10.2 PPG) continue to be Earlham's two offensive threats averaging over ten points per game. Seniors Maya Luney and Shania Feathers each average over four rebounds per game while Franklin dishes out 2.6 assists per contest. Dani Kissel leads the Cardinals in scoring at 16.5 points per game while Kiersten Taylor averages 12.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. Oreyana Curry fuels the Britons' offense to the tune of 17.6 points per game.
