RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College women's basketball team opens its 2016-17 season at the Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) Tournament this weekend.
The Tournament: Earlham will face LaRoche College at 6 p.m. on Friday followed by either Washington & Jefferson or Case Western Reserve at 2/4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Teams: Earlham, LaRoche, W&J, and Case Western Reserve. The Quakers finished last season with a 5-20 record overall and a 3-15 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play. The Red Hawks are 0-1 this season after falling to Carnegie-Mellon University on Tuesday. The Presidents finished last year 24-6 overall while the Spartans are 0-1 after falling to Ohio Northern University (ONU) to begin the season on Tuesday.
The Coaches: Janel Iden is his her fifth season with the Earlham women's basketball program including her third as head coach. Iden guided the Quakers to a 9-16 record in her first year as head coach. Before arriving at Earlham, Iden spent three years as an assistant coach at Mount Union. The Purple Raiders went 80-11 and appeared in three NCAA Division III Tournaments during that time. Kam Gissendanner is in her fifth season leading LaRoche. Jina DeRubbo is in her 13thd season as head coach at W&J while Jennifer Reimer has coached Case Western Reserve for nine seasons.
The Players: Senior Hannah Franklin, who led all of NCAA Division III in free throw percentage, returns after averaging 13.2 points and 4.1 assists per game. Junior Mariah Flynn and senior Maya Luney each scored over seven points per game last season and combined for 12 rebounds per game to lead the Quakers in the category. Sabrina McLin leads the Red Hawks in scoring at 25 points per game while Beka Bellhy led W&J last season scoring 19.3 points per game. Hillary Hellmann scored 17 points in the Spartans' loss to ONU.
Season-Openers: Earlham has not won a season-opener since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010-11 season.
