RICHMOND, Ind – The Earlham College men's and women's cross country teams each earned All-Academic Team awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Thursday.
For a team to earn All-Academic Team honors, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and record a 3.10-or-higher cumulative GPA.
Both Earlham cross country teams participated at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship in Shelbyville, Ind., with the men's team finishing 20th and the women's team placing 23rd.
"It is important to us that the student athletes we work with are dynamic and curious individuals," said Claire Hewitt, Earlham's co-head cross country and track & field coach. "We recognize that being athletes in our program is only one part of the lives that they have on this campus. We love getting to know all the other pieces that make up their lives as well and it is great to see them setting and achieving their goals in other areas of life, particularly here in the classrooms."
The Earlham men's cross country was one of four programs in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, along with Bluffton University, Franklin College, and Hanover College. The Earlham women's cross country team was joined on the roster of USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams by Anderson University, Bluffton University, and Franklin College.
