DELAWARE, Ohio – Earlham College men's tennis split a pair of matches hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, knocking off Franciscan University (Ohio) by a 9-0 score, before falling to the host Battling Bishops, 6-3.
Earlham goes to 5-3 overall with the split in the squad's final tune-up before its slate of six matches during its upcoming spring break trip to Florida.
Earlham 9, Franciscan (Ohio) 0
Four of the six singles matches required extra tennis to produce a winner, with Vitalii Stadnyk playing a marathon match at no. 1 singles before finally beating Franciscan's Jake Haffner, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 10-5.
Sergeev's match at no. 2 singles also required a super-tiebreak set before he was also to record the 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 triumph, as did Karun Rathi with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory at no. 6 singles.
Ohio Wesleyan 6, Earlham 3
The Quakers held a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches. The duo of Stadnyk/Vojislav Tatarevic defeated OWU's Jack Hibbard/Diego Venegas Vargas, 8-6, at no. 1 doubles, while Brandon Giordanelli and Nicola Manni teamed up to post an 8-6 victory over the Battling Bishops' Alex Lutz and Jacob Volbers.
Moving into singles play, Earlham posted its only victory at no. 6 singles where Joaquin Lerner notched a 2-6, 7-5, 15-13 win over Ohio Wesleyan's Felipe Duarte.
Quaker men's tennis will be back on the courts on Tuesday, March 13, when the squad faces UW-LaCrosse in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA National Campus. Match time is 8:00 a.m., with a second match against East Texas Baptist following at 3:00 p.m.
