DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College scored two goals in the final six minutes to come from behind and defeat the Earlham College men's soccer team 2-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Quakers got on the board first as junior Valentino Mbaya found freshman Micah Roland for his third goal of the year in the 14th minute. Earlham, which held Defiance to just five shots in the first half, would take that lead into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets (5-6-2, 2-1-1 HCAC) turned up the offensive pressure in the second half as Defiance took nine shots in the final 45 minutes. Earlham's defense held strong through 80 minutes, however, as sophomore goalkeeper Peter Kashatus made six saves.
Defiance ultimately tied the game on a goal from Jacob Diffenderfer in the 85th minute off of an assist from Jacob Carriveau. Riding the momentum of tying the game, Carriveau found the back of the net two and a half minutes later to secure the game-winning goal.
Defiance took 14 shots in the game compared to eight for Earlham. Both teams earned four corner kicks.
The Quakers, who have lost three straight games, fall to 5-7-0 on the season and 1-3-0 in the conference. Earlham will host Anderson University on homecoming Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
