Matt Gehring enters his second year as head men’s and women’s golf coach at Earlham College for the 2017-18 academic year.

He mentored Graham Sherard who earned medalist honors with a round of 74 at the Fall Invitational in 2016. Additionally, Hannah Toresdahl fired a program-best round of 74 at the Saint Francis Invitational.

Gehring came to Earlham from fellow Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) member Defiance College where he served as head women's golf coach and assistant men's golf coach since 2012. At Defiance, Gehring was involved in every facet of the program including, but not limited to: recruiting calls, upkeep of indoor facility, assisting student-athletes in advising, scheduling of practices and tournaments, managing the program's budget, and organizing service outreach projects.

Gehring was a four-year member of the Defiance men's golf team from 2009-12. As a Yellow Jacket, he was named HCAC Golfer of the Week once as a senior. Later that spring, Gehring placed in the top 20 at the HCAC Championship.

While coaching at Defiance, Gehring acquired a master's degree in Business Administration in 2014. From April of 2015 to being hired at Earlham, he served as director of golf operations at Eagle Rock Golf Club.

In January of 2016, Gehring became certified as a Professional Flight Scope Instructor at the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Expo in Orlando, Florida. He and is wife Jordan reside in Richmond.
