THE SHORT STORY: Earlham College sophomore Garrett Schuler sat atop the individual leaderboard after Saturday's first round of the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship, at The University Club in Lexington, Ky. Schuler led an Earlham squad that carded a 302 (+14) through 18 holes and was second in the team standings, just seven strokes behind tournament leader Transylvania University (295, +7).
OFF THE TEE
- Schuler carded seven birdies in the first round to shoot a three-under 69, taking a two-stroke lead over Transy's Zach Treilobs. Schuler matched his lowest round of the season despite a double-bogey on no. 18 to end the day.
- Junior Nate Mynatt fired a two-over 74 and was in seventh place through 18 holes, with birdies on nos. 2 and 5, as well as the par-3 no. 12.
- Junior Graham Sherard shot a six-over 78 on Saturday and was among a group of three golfers tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
- Sophomore Josh Maclin and first year Jared Stone were both outside the top 20 after Saturday's round, but were well within striking distance of joining that group. Maclin fired a nine-over 81 and was tied for 22nd, while Stone was tied for 26th with an 82 (+10).
Round 2 of the 2019 HCAC Men's Golf Championship will take place on Sunday, April 28, starting at 9:00 a.m., with the first Earlham golfer teeing off 10:48 a.m. The final group, which will include Garrett Schuler, tees off at 11:24 a.m.
