Field Hockey Bests Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 for Second Time

DELAWARE, Ohio – Junior Maite Turlings provided two goals for the Earlham College field hockey team as the Quakers defeated Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) 3-1 for the second time this season on Sunday.

Turlings scored the only goal of the first half unassisted in the 27th minute. OWU fired eight shots compared to five for Earlham, but sophomore goalkeeper Camille van der Vaart, who made four saves in the game, kept the shutout intact.

Leading 1-0, senior Megan Hut converted a penalty stroke 10 minutes into the second half to double the visitor's lead, but the Battling Bishops cut their deficit to a single goal when Alexis Roberts found Jamie Grant in the 50th minute. With OWU pushing numbers forward in an attempt to tie the game, Turlings found the back of the net for the eighth time this season with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation to put the game away.

Earlham took 20 shots in the game compared to 16 for OWU. The Quakers held a 15-8 edge in shots in the second half. Hut and Turlings combined for 17 of those shots while freshman Sofia Salvatore took two shots on goal.

van der Vaart earned the win with her four saves. Freshman Alexis Warren also chipped in a defensive save.

Earlham (4-8, 3-7 NCAC) hosts the College of Wooster and Oberlin College as part of Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 21-22.
