RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College field hockey team begins its 2016 season with a pair of home games at Darrell Beane Stadium this weekend. The Quakers will face Concordia University (Wisc.) on Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by Transylvania University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Teams: Earlham, Concordia, and Transylvania. The Quakers finished last season 4-13, the highest win total since 2009, and 3-11 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition. The Falcons are entering their first year of athletic competition at the varsity level in field hockey in 2016 while the Pioneers are 0-1 on the year after a 3-0 loss to Kenyon on Sept. 1.
The Coaches: Heather Moore enters her fourth year as Earlham's head coach. She led the Quakers to their best finish since 2009 in 2015 as well as a come-from-behind, overtime win over the College of Wooster for the first time since 1993. Samantha Landis is in her first season as Concordia's head coach while Sarah Humphries, a former Earlham assistant, enters her second season as head coach at Transylvania.
The Players: Senior Megan Hut, an NFHCA First Team All-Great Lakes Region selection last season, returns to lead the Quakers offensively. Hut finished with a team-high nine goals (on two hat tricks) and 21 points. Seniors Kaitlyn Brunner (nine points) and Kristina Brunner (eight points) also return for their final season wearing the Maroon and White. Defensively, sophomores Thu Pham and Natalie Blatz return after starting all 17 games a season ago.
Recent Series History: Earlham is 2-4 against Transylvania in the last six seasons. The Quakers won 2-1 back in 2010 and notched a 4-0 shutout win over the Pioneers to open the season last year. Due to Concordia being a new program, Earlham has never played the Falcons.
