Football Heads to Rose-Hulman For Battle of Boarder Broadsword Game Saturday



RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College football team closes out its 2016 season with a trip to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for a 1:30 p.m. Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) game on Saturday.

The Teams: Earlham and Rose-Hulman. The Quakers stand at 0-9 on the season after falling to Bluffton University 54-20 on senior day. The Fightin' Engineers (7-2, 6-1 HCAC) had a bye last week.

The Coaches: Nick Johnson enters his second year as Earlham's head football coach. The HCAC Coach of the Year in 2015, Johnson played football for the Quakers from 1997-01 and later served the program as defensive coordinator from 2007-12. He also held the position of head track and field coach for 12 seasons. Jeff Sokol is in his sixth season lead the Rose-Hulman football program.

The Offense: Sophomore Treylon Anderson has thrown for 1,109 yards and five touchdowns this season. Junior Wesley Hundley has aided the Quakers in all facets of offense having thrown for 625 yards, rushed for 430 yards, and caught 37 passes for two scores. Fellow junior Marcaus Cooper has 493 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Austin Swenson has thrown for over 2,000 yards and 22 touchdowns to lead the Engineers offensively. A duo of running backs, Stanley Hogan and Kevin Dufauchard, have rushed for over 500 yards. 

The Defense: Senior Lajay Kelly leads the Quakers in tackles with 73 while freshmen Grant Bowersock and Torrie Mayberry have each recorded over 60 tackles. Senior defensive back James Johnson has two interceptions this year. John Kirby heads the Rose-Hulman defense with 59 tackles. As a unit, the Engineers allow just under 18 points per game.

Recent History: Earlham has not beaten Rose-Hulman since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) prior to the 2010 season.

Battle for the Boarder Broadsword: Earlham, located on the east boarder of Indiana, and Rose-Hulman, located on the west boarder of Indiana, have played for the broadsword since 2001.
