RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College football team continues Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play when the Quakers travel to six-time HCAC champion Franklin College on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from Faught Stadium.
The Teams: Earlham and Franklin. The Quakers are in search of their first victory of the season after falling to Defiance College 59-28 last week. The Grizzlies are 4-1 this season after a 41-27 victory against Manchester University last weekend.
The Coaches: Nick Johnson enters his second year as Earlham's head football coach. The HCAC Coach of the Year in 2015, Johnson played football for the Quakers from 1997-01 and later served the program as defensive coordinator from 2007-12. He also held the position of head track and field coach for 12 seasons. Mike Leonard became Franklin College's head football coach in 2003 and led the Grizzlies to an NCAA Division III quarterfinals appearance in 2008.
The Offense: Freshman Treylon Anderson leads the Quakers' passing attack averaging over 194 yards per game. Juniors Marcaus Cooper and Wesley Hundley along with sophomore Elijah Bilal have all caught over 17 passes for Earlham. Cooper leads the scoring efforts with three receiving touchdowns and one passing touchdown. Junior Chase Burton leads the Grizzlies under center with 1,736 passing yards and a 69-percent pass completion rate.
The Defense: A trio of freshmen Quakers, Grant Bowersock, Torrie Mayberry, and Kobe Walker, all average over nine tackles per game. Senior James Johnson and freshman Jordan Christian have each intercepted one pass. Devante Ash and Austin Day have tallies 23 tackles to lead Franklin's defensive. Zachary Turner has a team-high 3.5 sacks.
Punt for the Ages: In the second quarter of Earlham's loss to Anderson, freshman Jordan Christian kicked an 83-yard punt, breaking the 49-year old record set by Sam Hogenaur's 79-yard punt during the 1967 season.
Recent History: Earlham has not beaten Franklin since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season.
