Football Hosting Defiance on Saturday

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College football team continues Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play when the Quakers host Defiance College for a 1:30 p.m. contest at Darrell Beane Stadium on Saturday.

The Teams: Earlham and Defiance. The Quakers are in search of their first victory of the season after falling to Anderson University 31-14 two weeks ago. The Yellow Jackets are 1-3 this season after a 22-15 loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology last weekend. Defiance's only win is an 18-6 triumph over Hope College on Sept. 10.

The Coaches: Nick Johnson enters his second year as Earlham's head football coach. The HCAC Coach of the Year in 2015, Johnson played football for the Quakers from 1997-01 and later served the program as defensive coordinator from 2007-12. He also held the position of head track and field coach for 12 seasons. Casey Goff is in his first season as Defiance's head football coach including his second on staff.

The Offense: Freshman Treylon Anderson leads the Quakers' passing attack averaging over 194 yards per game. Juniors Marcaus Cooper and Wesleyan Hundley along with sophomore Elijah Bilal have all caught over 12 passes for Earlham. Cooper leads the scoring efforts with two receiving touchdowns and one passing touchdown. Defiance averages over 183 yards passing and 88 yards rushing per game. Logan Scott has thrown for four touchdowns.

The Defense: A trio of freshmen Quakers, Grant Bowersock, Torrie Mayberry, and Kobe Walker, all average over nine tackles per game. Senior James Johnson and freshman Jordan Christian have each intercepted one pass. Keandre Gilmer has tallied 42 tackles to lead the Defiance defense. As a team, the Yellow Jackets have 12 sacks in four games.

Punt for the Ages:
In the second quarter of Earlham's loss to Anderson, freshman Jordan Christian kicked an 83-yard punt, breaking the 49-year old record set by Sam Hogenaur's 79-yard punt during the 1967 season.

Recent History: Earlham has not beaten Defiance since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season. The Quakers' closest game with the Yellow Jackets is a 26-10 loss on Oct. 15, 2011.
