RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College football team continued play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday as the Quakers fell 34-10 to Defiance College.

The Yellow Jackets (2-3, 2-1) grabbed a 13-0 advantage early in the second period before the Quakers were able to get on the scoreboard.

Ryan Acosta (San Juan, PR, Commonwealth) capped a 9-play, 67-yard drive when he kicked a 20-yard field goal with three seconds left in the first half to close the gap to 13-3 by intermission.

Defiance added scores in the third quarter and early in the fourth stanza to lead 27-3.

After a Defiance punt, Earlham was able to put together a 7-play, 39-yard touchdown drive.

Quarterback Alonzo Genelin (Arcadia, WI, Arcadia) hit Lance Sherwood (Mt. Morris, MI, Kearsley) for a 13-yard scoring pass that Sherwood battled his way into the end zone to make it 27-10.

Defiance finished the scoring with another touchdown later in the fourth quarter.

Genelin completed 14-of-32 passes for 188 yards and a score. Marcus Coby (Coral Springs, FL, Heritage) led the Quakers with five catches for 64 yards.

Jalen Kenner (Reserve, LA, East St. John) had three receptions for 38 yards. Jaysn Murphy (Winchester, IN, Winchester), Andy Cain (Hamilton, OH, Hamilton) and Sherwood had two grabs apiece.

Tre Stephens (Terre Haute, IN, South) had a combined 77 yards, He ran for 43 yards, while catching two passes for 34 yards.

Defensively, Richard Martinez (Hialeah, FL, Mater Academy) led the Quakers with 12 tackles, while Kaleb Lingg (Dayton, OH, Northridge) had nine tackles.

Earlham (0-5, 0-3) is idle next week before returning to action on the road at Manchester University on Saturday, Oct. 13. The HCAC contest is at 1:30 p.m.
