RICHMOND, Ind. – Four Earlham College baseball were recognized with All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors, when the league's post-season accolades were announced Tuesday.
Walter Talcott, Danny Dopp, and Addison Robertson were Second Team All-HCAC honorees, while Dre Davis was given the nod as an Honorable Mention selection. Matt Mathies was Earlham's representative on the HCAC Sportsmanship Team.
Talcott finished the 2018 season with a 2.33 earned run average over 69.2 innings pitched and 10 appearances, posting a 5-2 record. He ranks third in the HCAC in ERA and strikeouts (64), against just six walks. His 10.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio is best in the conference and ranks seventh among Division III leaders. Talcott fanned a season-high 16 strikeouts over eight innings in the first game of a doubleheader against Bluffton.
Robertson posted a .357 batting average over 143 at bats during 2018 – 10th in the HCAC – with 51 hits including 14 for extra bases. He crossed for 31 runs scored during the 2018 season, and had 27 runs batted in. Robertson is fourth among Division III leaders with 36 stolen bases and second in stolen bases per game (0.97). He recorded 13 multiple hit games and seven multiple RBI outings and had an 11-game hitting streak during the early part of April that matched the Quakers' longest of the season.
Dopp charted a .308 batting average during the season with 41 hits, including a team-best five home runs, with 20 runs scored and 33 RBI. He tallied 10 multiple hit games in 2018 with nine multiple RBI outings, including four-RBI performances against both Wittenberg and Defiance.
Davis hit .328 for the season with 39 hits and 16 runs scored, while driving in 21 runs. He had 12 multiple hit games during the season with six multiple RBI performances.
Mathies recorded a 3.21 ERA in his final season in Maroon and White, finishing with a 4-2 record with one save. He charted 24 strikeouts over 33.2 innings pitched against just 11 walks. Over four years with the Quakers, Mathies posted a 4.63 ERA with 61 strikeouts over 112.2 innings of work.
Earlham baseball completed its 2018 campaign with a 23-14 mark, 7-10 in the HCAC, finishing sixth in the conference standings.
