Baseball Fall to Franklin 11-6 in Game One of Series

RICHMOND, Indiana – Franklin College scored a run in six consecutive innings in an 11-6 victory over the Earlham College baseball team in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Randal R. Sadler Stadium on Friday evening.

The Grizzlies (12-6, 4-1 HCAC) scored two runs in the third inning, one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, and two runs in the sixth inning. Franklin tallied at least two hits in four of those six innings.

The Quakers scored one run in the first six innings, a double from senior Brennan Laird in the third.

Franklin, which chased Earlham starter, senior Howie Smith, after a dozen hits in six innings, scored two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth. The Quakers matched the Grizzlies in both of those innings, however, plating two runs in the seventh on a single from Laird and an error, and three runs on three hits in the eighth.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning.

Smith took the loss for Earlham, dipping to 3-2 on the season. Junior Dorian Holmes provided the Quakers' pitching staff with quality outs, however, striking out three batters and not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings pitched.

Mitchell Caster earned the win for Franklin pitching seven innings and striking out 10 while allowing two earned runs.

The Quakers recorded 10 hits as a team with Laird being the only player to record two or more hits. Senior Cody Krumlauf went 1-3 with two walks.

The Grizzlies, which had 14 team hits, were led by Alex Mis's 3-6 performance with three runs scored.

The two teams will conclude their HCAC series with a doubleheader at Sadler Stadium tomorrow (Saturday). First pitch is slated for noon.
