Baseball Hosts Heidelberg in Non-Conference Contest on Thursday



RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College baseball team hosts Heidelberg University for a 4 p.m. contest at Sadler Stadium on Thursday.

The Teams: Earlham and Heidelberg. The Quakers are 1-3 on the season after defeating Olivet 20-11 in an offensive shootout last Wednesday. The Student Princes stand at 6-4 after finishing their spring trip to Florida. The Berg has also lost to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) member Anderson University 12-11 on Feb. 25.

The Coaches: Steve Sakosits is in his seventh season leading the Earlham baseball program. A coach of 38 All-HCAC honorees, Sakosits is the program's all-time leader in career victories and has led the Quakers to the HCAC Tournament the past two seasons. Chad Fitzgerald is in his 10th season in the Heidelberg dugout including his third as head coach.

Hitters to Watch: Senior Eric Elkus leads the Quakers in RBIs with 11 and home runs with three. Freshman Danny Dopp has a .412 batting average to go along with six RBIs and a team-high two triples. Freshman Isaiah Shake is also have a standout campaign, batting an even .500 with a team-high four doubles. Alex Manner leads the Berg with 11 RBIs and nine walks. Joey Rydzewski has a .381 batting average and a team-high 12 stolen bases.

Pitchers to Watch: Freshman Austin Green and junior Dorian Holmes are the two Quaker pitchers to boast under a 4.00 ERA, though both have pitched under four innings. Freshman Jordan Christian, who started Earlham's last contest, has six strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched. Anthony Hajdu is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in 18.0 innings pitched for the Student Princes.

HCAC Player of the Week Honors: Eric Elkus was named HCAC Hitter of the Week for his performance against Olivet. The senior finished 3-6 with four RBIs and two home runs to go along with four runs scored.
