RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College Senior Director of Athletics Julie Kline has selected new leadership for the Earlham cross country and track & field programs, with a goal of building upon the Quakers' success in recent years.

Emily Lawrence, who has coached nine NCAA Division III track & field national qualifiers and 16 conference individual titles as an assistant, was named the head men's and women's track & field coach, and will be an assistant coach for the Earlham cross country squads.

"I am beyond excited that Emily Lawrence has accepted the leadership role for our track and field programs. Her professional journey in college athletics will be added value to the student-athlete experience within our track and field programs. I am looking forward to the expansion of our programs and watching our student-athletes compete at the highest levels," said Kline.

Derick Lawrence, a two-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Coach of the Year and veteran collegiate head coach, will lead the Earlham men's and women's cross country programs, and serve as an assistant in track & field.

"I am thrilled to welcome Derick to Earlham College and Quaker Athletics. Coach Lawrence brings a wealth of experience and success to our cross country programs and department.
I have complete confidence in his ability to elevate our cross country program to new heights," said Kline.

Emily Lawrence joins Earlham from Albion College in Michigan, where she most recently served as an assistant track and field coach since 2015. She produced five NCAA qualifiers, four USTFCCCA All-Region qualifiers, and four MIAA conference champions during her four-year stint with the Britons, including a 12th-place finisher in the shot put at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Prior to her time at Albion, Emily served as an assistant coach and head strength & conditioning coach at the University of Texas at Tyler from 2010 to 2014. She earned USTFCCCA Men's South/Southeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors for her work with the UT-Tyler throwers; among the athletes she mentored was thrower Buck Thompson, who earned 2013 USTFCCCA Men's South/Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year honors. In addition to her work with the UT-Tyler throwers, Emily coached a women's 2014 NCAA qualifier in the 100m with a school record time of 12.04 seconds.

During her time at UT-Tyler, the Patriots captured men's American Southwest Conference titles in 2013 and 2014, while the women's team finished atop the ASC in 2014. Collectively, Emily Lawrence helped coach Patriot track and field athletes to 76 new school records, 17 all-conference performances, 12 academic all-conference awards, 16 ASC individual titles, four NCAA qualifiers, and two USTFCCCA Division III All-Americans.

A 2010 graduate of the University of Dayton and former heptathlete for the Flyers, Emily Lawrence finished third in the heptathlon at both the 2009 and 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor T&F Championships. She received her master's degree in kinesiology from UT-Tyler in 2012, holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential from the National Strength & Conditioning Association, and has USTFCCCA Multievent Specialist certification.

Derick Lawrence also comes to Earlham from Albion College, where he recently completed his fifth season as the Britons' head men's and women's cross country coach. Derick coached the first Albion men's or women's runner to earn USTFCCCA cross country All-America honors (Jessica Shaw, 2016), and the following year coached the first men's cross country All-American (Andrew Bill, 2017). In 2018, Derick Lawrence coached his third cross country All-American in as many seasons in Cassandra Vince, who placed 10th individually at the 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships – the best individual national finish in school history. With Derick Lawrence at the helm, Albion men's cross country finished among the top five in the Great Lakes Region in each of the last two seasons, and briefly broke into the national rankings.

On the track, Derick Lawrence coached Vince to a pair of Division III all-time top 10 indoor track performances in the 3000m and the 5000m, as well as All-America honors in the 5000m with a fifth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Prior to his time at Albion, Derick was the head cross country coach at Trinity University (Texas) from 2012 to 2014. During that time, he earned USTFCCCA South/Southeast Women's XC Coach of the Year honors in 2012 and 2013 while leading the Trinity to back-to-back Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles and top 20 finishes at the NCAA meet, with a team-best 12th place finish in 2012. His men's teams also claimed consecutive SCAC titles in 2012 and 2013, with the 2012 squad becoming the first Texas Division III men's cross country program to qualify for the NCAA meet.

During his time as head coach at Trinity, Derick Lawrence coached one regional individual champion, 19 all-region selections, two individual conference champions, 32 all-conference performers.

Over the course of his 12 seasons as a collegiate cross country and track & field coach, Derick has mentored 12 USTFCCCA Division III All-Americans.

Derick Lawrence served as an assistant cross country coach at Trinity from 2010 to 2012, and was an assistant on the track and field staff throughout his time with the Tigers. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, DePauw University, from 2008 to 2010, and began his career as a volunteer assistant at Indiana State in 2007.

A 2007 graduate of DePauw, Derick Lawrence earned all-conference honors as a member of the Tigers' cross country team. He earned his master's degree from Indiana State in 2010, and holds Level 1 Coaching Education Certification from USA Track and Field, as well as the USTFCCCA Endurance Event Specialist Certification.
