RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College volleyball team concludes its 2017 regular season with a tri-match at Bluffton University. The Quakers will play the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament match against the Beavers at 1 p.m. followed by a non-conference match with Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) at 4 p.m.
The Teams: Earlham and Rose-Hulman. The Quakers are 15-11 overall and 3-5 in the HCAC after falling to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday. The Beavers are 16-12 overall and 6-2 in conference after a 3-1 win at Manchester Univeristy on Wednesday while the Scarlet Hawks are 14-15 overall and riding a 3-match winning streak.
The Coaches: Lauren Horton enters her fourth year at Earlham and third season leading the volleyball program. The IU-East alumna was a four-year starting setter for the Red Wolves and a three-time All-American. She holds the distinction of being the NAIA's all-time assists leader for the rally-scoring era. Steve Yarnell has been Bluffton's head volleyball coach for 13 years and has led the Beavers to several NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Katie Reifert is in her third year with the Illinois Tech volleyball program.
The Players: Freshman Julia Stewart leads the Quakers in kills with 295 while junior Ashleigh Burton averages 3.41 kills per set for an attack percentage of .284. Freshman Carly Federinko has a .218 attack percentage and 252 kills as an outside hitter. Sophomore setter Lauren Jackson dished out over 10 assists per set while junior libero Megan Hedinger notches 5.14 digs per set. Bethany Martini leads the Beavers with 397 kills and 4.14 kills per set while Sara Hassell has 249 kills for the Scarlet Hawks.
Recent History: Earlham is 0-7 against Bluffton since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season. The Quakers are 100 against Illinois Tech, however, with the victory coming in a 4-set win during the 2014 campaign.
NCAA Statistics Leader: Setter Lauren Jackson in 27th in all of NCAA Division III volleyball in assists pet set at 10.10.
Chasing Records: Lauren Jackson is 24 assists away from breaking Jen Maurie's record of 1,037 assists during the 1999 season. She is also on pace to surpass Amanda Prewitt's 9.46 assists per set during the 2007 campaign. Megan Hedinger, already the single-season leading in digs, is six digs away from eclipsing her record of 525 digs last season. She is also on pace to break her digs per set record of 5.10, also set in 2016.
HCAC Tournament Implications: Earlham sits in a tie for sixth place with Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) for the league's final spot in the HCAC Tournament. Because of MSJ's 5-set win over the Quakers, Earlham needs a win at Bluffton and a Lions loss at Franklin College to qualify.
