RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College volleyball team looks for second consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory on Wednesday when the Quakers host Transylvania University for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
The Teams: Earlham and Transylvania. The Quakers are 14-6 overall and 2-1 in conference after a convincing sweep of Franklin College. The Pioneers are 12-7 overall and 2-2 in the HCAC after road victories at Anderson University and at Manchester University.
The Coaches: Lauren Horton enters her fourth year at Earlham and third season leading the volleyball program. The IU-East alumna was a four-year starting setter for the Red Wolves and a three-time All-American. She holds the distinction of being the NAIA's all-time assists leader for the rally-scoring era. Kyle Walton, also an assistant director of athletics at Transylvania, is in his fourth year has head volleyball coach. He has led the Pioneers to consecutive HCAC Tournament berths.
The Players: Junior Ashleigh Burton and Julia Stewart both average over 3.50 kills per set to lead the Quakers' offense. Along with freshman Carly Federinko, the three all average over a .220 attack percentage. Sophomore Setter Lauren Jackson dished out over 10 assists per set while junior libero Megan Hedinger notches over five digs per set. Hannah Talkers commands the Pioneers' offense as she assists on nearly nine kills per set. Almost 3.50 of those kills come from right side Jordan Horne.
Recent History: Earlham has not beaten Transylvania since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season.
HCAC Offensive Player of the Week: Lauren Jackson is the reigning HCAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week as she dished out 11.25 assists per set last week.
Record Start: Earlham is off to a 14-6 start to the season, the program's best since the 2007. The Quakers have not won 15 games since the 1992 campaign.
