Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches to Open Season on Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois – The Earlham College volleyball team opened its 2017 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Illinois College Tournament on Friday. The Quakers fell to Greenville College 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-9) and defeated Fontbonne University (25-20, 25-22, 25-23).

In the loss to the Panthers, the Quakers took a 2-1 lead, but could not hold it against a team that qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2016.

Freshman Julia Stewart and sophomore Ashleigh Burton combined for 32 of Earlham's 53 kills. Burton, a First Team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) selection last season, also finished with nine digs and six blocks. Sophomore setter Lauren Jackson dished out 39 assists while junior Megan Hedinger anchored the back row with 29 digs.

As a team, the Quakers hit a .124 clip with 93 digs and 8.5 blocks.

In the victory over the Falcons, Earlham improved its hitting percentage to .180 while also recording 9.5 team blocks.

Burton (13), Stewart (12) and freshman Carly Federinko (10) tallied double digits in kills while Hedinger (22), junior Denisha Mataia (14) and sophomore Sydney Ameluxen (12) had double digit digs. Jackson averaged a dozen assists per set in the victory.

Earlham (1-1) will face two more St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponents in MacMurray College and Blackburn College tomorrow (Saturday).
