Track & field opens outdoor season at W&L Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va. – Earlham College first year Ellie Haland put a punctuation mark on the first day of the 2018 outdoor track and field season with her first-place finish in the women's 1500m run, Friday afternoon at the Washingtron & Lee University Carnival.

Haland posted a time of 4:53.38, over three seconds faster than the nearest finisher.

Megan Hut (22nd, 5:15.98) and Lindsey Gearin (29th, 5:29.31) also competed for Earlham in the women's 1500m.

In the men's 1500m, first year Nate Papachristos clocked a time of 4:09.49 and finished fourth overall in the event.

First year Noah Scherf was 13th overall out of 54 finishers in the men's 5000m with a time of 15:33.14.

In the 4 x 400m relays, the women's team of Haland, Jasmine Lorenzana, Hailey Beel, and Leilah Hicks finished fifth out of 11 squads with a time of 4:16.70, while the men's squad of Papachristos, Drew Fitzgibbon, Michael Grady, and Emanual Faria was ninth with a mark of 3:32.27.

In the women's long jump, Esther Mano was 15th after a jump of 13-11 3/4, while Kassidy West placed 20th after a leap of 13-10 1/4.

Victoria Trezona was the lone Earlham entry in the 10,000m, and she finished fifth in the women's race with a time of 44:01.67.

Competition in the W&L Carnival resumes on Saturday, March 17, starting at 11:00 a.m.
