DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Earlham College women's soccer team scored three first-half goals in a 4-0 victory over Defiance College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon.
The victory snapped a 2-game losing skid as the Quakers had lost their last two HCAC games 2-1.
Earlham's first four shots missed target compared to Defiance making three shots on goal in the opening stages, but sophomore goalkeeper Sari Stissi made the save on all three Yellow Jackets' shots. Midway through the first half, freshman Chloe Lamenzo netted her ninth goal of the season giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Defiance stepped up the offensive pressure in the next 10 minutes, but Stissi made three move saves to preserve the lead. Shortly after the Yellow Jacket barrage, freshman Yana Miller doubled the Quakers' lead as she beat a Defiance defender down the left side and scored her seventh goal of the year at the 37:51 mark.
Earlham's defense held strong in the second half, and Lamenzo found fellow freshman Jordan Blackburne in the 87th minute for the visitors' fourth goal of the game.
Defiance finished the game with 16 shots compared to 15 for Earlham. The Yellow Jackets put nine shots on goal, but Stissi, who earned the shutout victory, saved every shot. The Quakers earned five corner kicks compared to one for Defiance.
Earlham improves to 6-7-0 overall and 2-2-0 in HCAC play with the win. The Quakers face Anderson University on the road at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
