RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College men's cross country team opened its 2017 season with a victory at the Red Wolf Rumble hosted by Indiana University East on Friday.
The Quakers edged the host Red Wolves by finishing with 25 team points compared to 30 for the hosts.
Freshman Nate Papachristos and senior Gabriel Penk separated themselves from the field to claim individual winner and runner-up honors respectively. Papachristos finished the five-kilometer course in 16:37.5 while Penk was just over two seconds behind. The bronze medalist from IU East finished over 16 seconds behind Penk.
The Red Wolves also took fourth and fifth place, but a pair of freshmen solidified the next two spots for the Quakers as Noah Scherf (17.17.5) and Bineyam Tumbo (17:23.1) placed sixth and seventh respectively.
Salvador Campos of IU East finished in eighth, but sophomore Oliver Daniel closed out the meet for the Quakers with a time of 17:25.9 and a ninth-place finish.
The Quakers return to action at the Wittenberg University Invitational on Sept. 2.
