RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College men's tennis team was predicted to finish as the league's runner-up in 2019 according to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll unveiled on Friday.
Earlham received 81 points in voting conducted among the HCAC's head men's tennis coaches, and received one first-place vote.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, winners of the last four HCAC championships, was picked to repeat in 2019 and was atop the poll with 89 points. The Fightin' Engineers received the remaining eight first-place votes in the balloting.
Hanover College trailed the Quakers with 71 points, while Transylvania University and Franklin College were tied for fourth with 53 points each.
Earlham posted a 20-5 overall record in 2018, setting a new program single season wins record in the process. The 2018 eclipsed the previous mark of 18 wins, set in 2003 and tied in 2017. The Quakers were 6-1 in HCAC play, and reached the championship match of the HCAC Men's Tennis Championship where they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Fightin' Engineers.
The Quakers open their 2019 spring slate on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they face Case Western Reserve University and Wabash College in matches hosted by Wabash.
