RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College men's tennis team opens its spring season with an 11 a.m. match at Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) on Saturday.
The Teams: Earlham and Ohio Wesleyan. The Quakers finished 2-0 in the fall after victories over Adrian College and Trine University. The Battling Bishops, who were picked to finish sixth in the tough North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), finished 9-12 a season ago and have yet to play a dual match this season.
The Coaches: Shawn Hyden is in his first season as head men's tennis coach at Earlham. The Mount Union College alumnus spent the last two seasons as head men's and women's tennis coach at Arcardia University when he led the Knights to the Mid Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament championship match. Rob Postma, a 2002 Wittenberg University graduate, enters his second season as head coach at OWU.
The Players: Junior Vitalii Stadnyk, a two-time All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Most Valuable Player, finished last season 18-5 at first singles to go along with an 18-5 record at first doubles. Fellow junior Vojislav Tatarevic boasted a team-best 19-3 at fifth singles a season ago. Junior Shouta Fukamachi played first singles for the Bishops a season ago and had a 10-9 record at the flight.
Recent History: Ohio Wesleyan defeated Earlham 6-3 on March 7, 2015, marking the only time the two schools have played since the Quakers left the NCAC prior to the 2010-11 season (OWU is a current NCAC member).
