RICHMOND, Indiana - Sophomore Micah Roland found the back of the net twice early in the second half as the Earlham College men's soccer team downed Bluffton University 3-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener on Saturday.
Earlham outshot Bluffton 10-3 in the first half, but Beaver goalkeeper Levi Smith made seven saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The Quakers' offense broke through the Beaver defense in the 58th minute when junior Yuki Adams found Roland who broke the scoreless deadlock. Three minutes later, Roland scored again to put Earlham up 2-0.
Blake Hershberger scored the Beavers' lone goal on a penalty kick at the 82:05 mark.
Junior goalkeeper Nicola Manni made three saves and earned the victory in his first start of the season. Smith took the loss for Bluffton while making eight saves.
Dey, Roland and Tatarevic combined for 11 of the Quakers' 17 shots. Aaron Pennington fired two of Bluffton's five shots.
Earlham (1-8-0, 1-0-0 HCAC) continues conference play at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on the road on Wednesday.
