RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College men's soccer team hosts Wilmington College in the Quaker Bowl rivalry on Wednesday. Kickoff from Matlack-Messer Stadium is slated for 4 p.m.
The Teams: Earlham and Wilmington. The Earlham Quakers are 0-5-0 on the season and in search of a victory after falling to the College of Wooster 1-0 on Saturday. The Wilmington Quakers are 3-3-1 and won both games at the Kiwanis Classic last weekend, defeating Wittenberg University 4-0 and routing the University of Cincinnati Clermont 8-1.
The Coaches: Sam Byrd enters his third season as head men's soccer coach at his alma mater. The 2003 alumnus, who led the Quakers to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament berth in 2015, served as an assistant coach for longtime head coach Roy Messer for two seasons prior to being promoted to head coach in May of 2015. Bud Lewis, a Wilmington graduate, is in his 43rd season coaching his alma mater. Lewis recently won his 500th career game.
The Players: Senior Vojislav Tatarevic and freshman Drew Fitzgibbon have scored Earlham's two goals this season. Junior Yuki Adams has fired a team-high eight shots. Niklas Martensson and Roman Kirschner both have eight points to lead the Wilmington offense. Martensson has a team-high four goals.
Quaker Bowl: The athletics departments of Wilmington and Earlham have re-created the Quaker Bowl rivalry. Originally a traveling trophy for just football and men's basketball, the bowl will now be competed for across all sports the two schools compete in. Courtesy of victories in football and women's basketball, Wilmington leads the 2017-18 standings 2-0.
Recent History: Earlham is 3-2 against Wilmington since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) prior to the 2010 season.
