Stalling's career night and Zolman's double-double lead men's hoops past Defiance

Kenneth Stalling Jr.

DEFIANCE, Ohio – A 21-point night by Kenneth Stalling Jr. (Gary, Ind./Thea Bowman) and a double-double from Chainey Zolman (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester) combined to lead Earlham College men's basketball to a 68-66 win over Defiance College, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night at Karl H. Weaner Center.

Stalling netted his career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Zolman finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Senior Elijah Wilson-Thomas (Goldsboro, N.C./Massanutten) added 14 points of his own for his 18th double-digit scoring performance of the season.

After leading by as many as 10 points in the second half, 50-40, with 12:14 to play, Earlham (7-17, 5-12 Heartland) had to fight off several Defiance rally efforts. The Yellow Jackets cut the margin down to a single possession as late as the 6:23 mark when a Jamel Barnes (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) 3-pointer followed by a Wilson-Thomas jumper put the Quakers back in front by seven, 63-56, with 4:38 showing.

Defiance (3-21, 2-15 Heartland) slowly whittled away at the Earlham over the final two minutes, but a stingy Quaker defense held off the Yellow Jackets for the win.

The Quakers finished the game shooting 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field as a team, while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 33.8 percent (22-of-65).

Defiance had four players in double figures, led by Allante Wheeler with 17 points and eight rebounds, with Avion Franklin finishing with 14 points. Randall Aikins Jr. and Isaac Guy came off the bench to add 16 and 13 points respectively.

The Quakers close out their 2017-18 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 17, when they host Mount St. Joseph in a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. Earlham men's basketball will honor the achievements of its two seniors, Wilson-Thomas and Cezannie Mount (Long Beach, Calif./Poly), during pre-game ceremonies.
