RICHMOND, Indiana – Riding a ten-game winning streak, Transylvania University made 16 three-pointers in a 92-72 victory over the Earlham College men's basketball team in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Schuckman Court on Wednesday evening.
The Pioneers (13-5, 8-3 HCAC) scored on its first four possessions to take an 11-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. A Transylvania free throw put the visitors up 12-0 before sophomore Chainey Zolman scored Earlham's first basket at the 16:07 mark.
Transylvania, who came into the contest with the top scoring offense in the conference at 86.9 points per game, led by as many as 30 points (49-19) in the first half after a Bo Schuh triple with 4:38 to play in the half. The Quakers wouldn't go away, however, and ended the half on a 15-6 run fueled by eight points from sophomore Darrell Hutchison.
Trailing 55-34 at halftime, the Quakers got within 20 points with just over a minute to play in regulation.
Hutchison led the Quakers with 13 points while freshman John Sakaleros scored a career high 12 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. Freshman Bailey Stewart also netted a career high, 10 points in 25 minutes while fellow freshman Tarig Eldosougi grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in 12 minutes.
Gabe Schmitt led all scorers with 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 4-5 from three-point range. Three other Pioneers finished in double figures.
For the third time this season, Earlham outrebounded its opponent as the Quakers grabbed 40 rebounds compared to 33 for the Pioneers. Transylvania finished 50 percent shooting including 16-41 (39 percent) from three-point range.
Earlham returns to Schuckman Court on Saturday against Franklin College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
