Men's Basketball Looks for Winning Streak at Centre Wednesday




RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College men's basketball team plays its final non-conference road game on Wednesday as the Quakers travel to Centre College for a 3 p.m. contest.

The Teams: Earlham and Centre. The Quakers are 4-5 overall and recently earned their first conference win, an 80-77 triumph over Manchester University on Sunday. The Colonels stand at 4-2 overall after a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win over the University of the South (Sewanee). Centre faces Berea College on the road on Monday.

The Coaches: Earlham is under the direction of third-year head coach Jason Polykoff. An alumnus of Haverford College, Polykoff came to Earlham from Penn, where he served as an assistant coach. He also won four state championships at Friends' Central High School in Wynnewood, Pa. Greg Mason, a 1994 alumnus of Centre, enters his 17th season as the Colonel's head coach. He guided Centre to seven NCAA Division III Tournament berths in eight seasons from 2007-14.

The Players: Sophomore Darrell Hutchison leads Earlham in scoring at 15.6 points per game and is second on the squad in rebounding at 4.1 boards per contest. Five other Quakers average at least eight points per game including junior Elijah Wilson-Thomas at 10.8 points per game. Freshman Blake Bonin, who scored over nine points per game, dishes out 3.6 assists per contest while freshman Taig Eldsougi grabs a team-high 4.8 rebounds per game. Tucker Sine boosts Centre's offense to the tune of 16 points per game. He also leads the team in rebound at 5.2 rebounds per contest.

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Earlham 71.2, Centre 77.2; opponents' points per game – Earlham 75.0, Centre 74.3; field goal percentage – Earlham 40.2, Centre 46.7; three-point percentage – Earlham 35.7, Centre 41.0; rebounds per game – Earlham 33.6, Centre 32.7; assist-to-turnover ratio – Earlham 0.85, Centre 1.04.

Recent History: Centre defeated Earlham 55-54 at Wittenberg on Dec. 30 of last year. Earlham took a 54-53 lead on a layup from Wilson-Thomas, but Blake Scinta hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Colonels a 55-54 win.
