RICHMOND, Indiana – The Earlham College football team concludes its 2017 on Saturday when the Quakers host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) contest at Darrell Beane Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The Teams: Earlham and Rose-Hulman. The Quakers are 0-9 on the season and 0-7 in conference play after a 65-21 loss at the hands of Bluffton University on Saturday. The Fightin' Engineers are 7-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play after a bye week last week. Rose-Hulman can earn a share of the league championship with a win and a Franklin College loss at Hanover College.
The Coaches: Nick Johnson enters his third year as Earlham's head football coach. The HCAC Coach of the Year in 2015, Johnson played football for the Quakers from 1997-01 and later served the program as defensive coordinator from 2007-12. He also held the position of head track and field coach for 12 seasons. Jeff Sokol is in his seventh season as Rose-Hulman's head football coach and led the Engineers to their first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2016.
The Offense: Wesley Hundley has accounted for 2,268 of 2,689 yards (84 percent) of the Quakers' offense through nine games this season while leading the team in passing and rushing. Wide receiver Marcaus Cooper as hauled in 55 receptions for 478 yards and eight touchdowns. Darian Greeley has rushed for 450 yards and four scores in the Bluffton backfield. Rose-Hulman quarterback Andrew Dion averages over 236 yards per game passing and has thrown 19 touchdowns this season. Garrett Wight has 820 yards on the ground while Raymond Burtnick has caught 13 touchdowns.
The Defense: Kobe Walker leads the Quaker's defense with 76 tackles including 4.5 tackles for loss while also having one of Earlham's three interceptions on the season. Alfago Shumake has a team-high seven tackles for loss including four sacks while Dan O'Donnell leads the secondary with seven pass breakups. John Kirby has 66 tackles to lead the Engineers defensively. Mike Riley has 15.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss.
Broken Records: Wesley Hundley recently broke Manny Myers' record of 900 rushing yards with a 105-yard rushing performance at Bluffton last Saturday.
Recent History: Earlham is 0-7 against Rose-Hulman since joining the HCAC prior to the 2010 season. The closest game during that span was a 21-7 loss on Nov. 12, 2011.
Battle for the Border Broadsword: Earlham, located on the east border of Indiana, and Rose-Hulman, located on the west border of Indiana, have played for the broadsword since 2001.
Senior Day: Saturday's game marks the final game of the careers of seven seniors – Jacob Breen, Eric Bryant, Marcaus Cooper, Dakota Fields, Xavier Flores, Wesley Hundley, Roderick Matthews and Malik Reid. A brief celebration will be held prior to the contest.
