Baseball Alums Playing in Thoroughbred League This Summer

NICHOLASVILLE, Kentucky – Earlham College baseball alumni Devin Spurgon and Brandon Smalling are enjoying professional summer baseball in the Thoroughbred Baseball League.

Spurgon, a 2016 Earlham graduate, is an outfielder for the Broncos and has a .200 batting average, two RBIs, and two walks in two games played. A native of Marion, Indiana, Spurgon hit a .228 clip in his Earlham career along with seven home runs and 44 RBIs.

Smalling, a 2017 Earlham graduate, is playing first base for the Paints, who are in second place in the league. He has one hit and two RBIs in three games played thus far. A Mooresville, Indiana, native, Smalling hit .345 in his two-year Quaker career along with 76 RBIs. He was named Second Team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and First Team All-HCAC as a senior.

Spurgon and Smalling led Earlham to a 29-14 record in 2016 and a berth in the HCAC Tournament championship round.
