RICHMOND, Ind.Over half of the Earlham College athletes from the Class of 2010 are going to be honored on Friday as part of the annual Awards Convocation in Goddard Auditorium.

There are four recipients of the major honor in Earlham athletics, the George Van Dyke Outstanding Athlete Award. The men are Jake Carr (football, baseball) and Chris Shaw (football, track), while the women are Cassie Gage (field hockey) and Franny Newport (soccer).

The Van Dyke Award was established by an anonymous alumni gift to honor Van Dyke, professor of physics 1930-63. It is given to senior students who have made the most outstanding contribution to Earlham athletics. Women were first honored in 1979.

The North Coast Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award is given annually to one man and one woman from each school in the league. Instituted in the 1990-91 season, it honors outstanding academic and athletic achievement.

Max Crumley-Effinger (football) and Keeley McAnnis-Entenman (volleyball) are receiving the honor this year. Crumley-Effinger was also honored recently with a Fulbright Scholarship.

Academic Honors

There are 20 student-athletes being honored for academic performance with at least a 3.2 GPA.

The Wendel M. Stanley Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are:
• Bo Braun (cross country and track)
• Jake Carr (football, baseball)
• Max Crumley-Effinger (football)
• Evan Fackler (cross country, track)
• T.J. Ferrick (basketball)
• Steven Gotama (tennis)
• Will Katz (soccer)
• Adam Tobin (cross country)
• Aaron Weeden (tennis)
• John White (cross country, track)
• Galen Wilder (soccer)

Wendel M. Stanley Scholar-Athlete Award was established to honor one of the College's most distinguished alumni and an outstanding student-athlete. Wendell Stanley '26, received an Earlham Honorary Science degree in 1938 and a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1946. It is given to seniors who have combined significant participation in intercollegiate athletics with an unusually high level of academic achievement (3.2 GPA).

The Kathryn Weber Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are:
• Aleta Cox (volleyball)
• Emily Doering (cross country, track)
• Rachel Hawkins (tennis)
• Keeley McAnnis-Entenman (volleyball)
• Franny Newport (soccer)
• Faye Rowell (soccer)
• Michelle Surma (volleyball)
• Callie Thompson (soccer)
• Erin Witham (track)

The Kathryn Weber Scholar-Athlete Award was established to honor Kathryn Weber '29, professor of physical education 1936-73, convener of the women's physical education department, director of Big May Day and role model for many women students. It is given to senior women who meet the following criteria: maintenance of a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and significant contribution to the athletic program.

Other Academic Awards

There are also other academic awards being handed out to student-athletes:

• Evan Fackler (cross country, track). The Warren Staebler Award was established to honor Warren Staebler, professor of English from 1946-1978 who was the winner of the Doan Distinguished Faculty Travel Award in 1965.  He was also a member of Richmond's Commission on Human Rights. It is given to a senior who combines a love of literature and arts with high intellectual standards and a concern for the welfare of others. Students are selected by the faculty of the English department.

• Will Katz (soccer). The Ruby Davis Award honors former English department convener Ruby Davis '03, member of the first women's varsity basketball team 1901-02, in recognition of her long, devoted teaching career and her wise, understanding guidance of students.

• Ian Kratzke (tennis). The Russell M. Lawall Biomedical Research Award was established by Russell M. Lawall '25. It is given to a student selected by the Health Services Program Committee to recognize and encourage original study or research by a student or collaborative research done together by the student and faculty.

• Jayana Sims (basketball). The Charles Stubbs Award is a bequest from Charles Stubbs (Class of 1897), Quaker school teacher and Trustee 1939-1942. It provides an award to those students preparing for a church vocation who have demonstrated the most conspicuous ability in preaching. Students are selected by the faculty of the religion department.

• Irhad Strika (soccer). The William C. Dennis Scholarship was established in 1994 with gifts from alumni, friends and family.  This endowed scholarship honors William Cullen Dennis, an 1896 Earlham graduate and the College's sixth president (1929-1946). This scholarship is given to a junior or senior who is pursuing study in international affairs or who has shown an interest in pursuing a legal career.

• Adam Tobin (cross country). The Arthur M. Charles Service Award is given to foreign language students in recognition of service to the foreign language department, excellence in foreign language study and fine character. Recipients of this award are selected by the language department.

• Eric Witham (track). The William M. Fuson Award in Sociology/Anthropology was established by friends and former students to honor Professor Emeritus William M. Fuson, professor of sociology from 1946-79.  Fuson was also a director of planning, special assistant to the President, world traveler, and photographer. These awards are given to senior students who have done outstanding work in the field of sociology/anthropology and who exhibit the dedication to apply this knowledge to bettering the human condition. Students are selected by the faculty of the sociology/anthropology department.

• Jay Zevin (football). The Sociology/Anthropology Faculty Award is presented for outstanding intellectual achievement in the field of sociology/anthropology.

Emily Sells
Women's Basketball
Emily Sells scored 11 points against Transylvania University in an 84-80 loss on Feb. 1.

She posted team-high numbers with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Ryan Taylor led Earlham with 19 points against nationally-ranked Transylvania University as the Quakers fell 89-76 to the Pioneers, who are ranked 18th in the latest d3hoops.com poll .

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game was in Lexington on Feb.1.
