RICHMOND, Ind.The Earlham College baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Sunday as the Quakers fell to Robert Morris-Springfield 13-6 in the opener and 6-4 in the second contest at McBride Stadium.

Earlham’s best chance for a victory came in the second game as the Quakers had opportunities in the last two innings.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Quakers left the bases loaded.

After giving up a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, Earlham got three straight runners on base to begin the bottom of the frame. With one out, Chris Baumann walked with the bases loaded. Corey Murray added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4, but that was all the Quakers could produce as they left two runners on base.

The Eagles (14-24) started the contest with a pair of runs in the first inning. Earlham made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Conner Gable knocked in a run with a single.

The Quakers tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning. Chris Tillery led off with a single and moved to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Nate Reynolds. Andrew Morrical followed with a double to right that scored Tillery.

Robert Morris-Springfield scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead and set the stage for Earlham’s opportunities at a comeback.

Gable (1-3) went the distance on the mound for the Quakers. He gave up six runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Gable and Tillery led the Quakers with two hits each.

Game One

Robert Morris-Springfield scored three times in the third and added five in the fourth to build an 8-0 advantage in the opener.

Earlham closed the gap with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Schroeder led off the frame with a single and he moved to third on an errant throw on a pick off attempt. He then scored on a wild pitch.

With one out, Baumann was hit by a pitch and Murray walked before Gable singled to score Baumann to make it 8-2.

Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Ross Yohoh had a RBI single that hit off the glove and head of pitcher Eagles Shamus Smith into left field.

Justin Broach followed with a fielder’s choice that produced another run and as the Eagles tried to turn a double play, an error allowed the final run of the rally to score.

The Eagles responded with a run in the fifth and then four more in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Morrical singled with two outs to knock in the last run of the contest.

Baumann (1-1) started the opener for Earlham. He worked three innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Earlham (8-22, 2-12 in the North Coast Athletic Conference) is at Denison University on Wednesday. The NCAC doubleheader starts at 5 p.m.

Women's Basketball
Emily Sells scored 11 points against Transylvania University in an 84-80 loss on Feb. 1.

She posted team-high numbers with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
