GREENCASTLE, Ind.The Earlham College baseball team finally got to play its season opener on Sunday as the Quakers fell 11-3 to DePauw University.

However, the second game of the doubleheader was rained out. Sunday’s contests were scheduled after doubleheaders with Berea College and Goshen College were postponed this weekend.

DePauw’s seven-run inning in the bottom of the sixth was the difference as the Tigers (6-3) broke open a close contest.

Earlham posted the initial run of the game in the first inning. Andrew Morrical led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a single by Tyler Schroeder. Morrical scored on a fielder’s choice by Jake Carr.

DePauw scored three times in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Tigers added another tally in the third to build a three-run advantage.

Ross Yoho closed the gap for the Quakers with a run-scoring single in the fourth.

In the fifth, Earlham scored what turned out to be its final run of the contest. Morrical singled and Schroeder moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Corey Murray knocked in Morrical with a single, which set the stage for DePauw’s decisive rally one inning later.

Starting pitcher Adam Painter (0-1) worked into the sixth inning for the Quakers until Murray was called on to get the final out.

Earlham (0-1) is scheduled to play a doubleheader with Geneva College on Friday as the Quakers begin their Florida trip to Ft. Pierce.
