Slow Start in Second Half Hurts Quakers

RICHMOND, Ind.A difficult second half proved to be the difference Sunday afternoon as the Earlham College men’s basketball team dropped a 74-61 decision to Denison University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

With the scored tied 26-26 at intermission of the North Coast Athletic Conference game, Denison (5-16, 5-7) began the second half with a 13-5 run to take a 39-31 lead at the 15:53 mark.

From that point, Denison widened its margin to double digits and was able to maintain its distance from the Quakers.

Matt Marsh posted career-high totals of 19 points and four steals. He also grabbed four rebounds. A. J. Sutherlin finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Quakers on top in first half

Earlham started the afternoon with an advantage. Dustin Rusk hit a 3-pointer and Marty Broderick added a basket as the Quakers led 5-2 until Denison hit a trey to tie the contest at 5-5 with 11:24 to go in the opening period.

After the Big Red had a brief lead, Earlham picked up its pace and built a 22-15 margin with 4:47 remaining in the first half when Ryan Taylor drilled a 3-pointer.

Denison battled back and eventually tied the contest on a 3-pointer with six seconds left before halftime.

The Quakers (3-18, 1-11) are back in action Wednesday at Wittenberg University. The NCAC match up gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
