DELAWARE, Ohio — Four minutes in the second half was the difference for the
Earlham College men’s basketball team on Saturday as the Quakers fell 70-62 in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at
Ohio Wesleyan University.
After trailing most of the second half,
Dustin Rusk hit a pair of free throws to give the Quakers a 49-48 lead with 7:57 remaining in the game.
The Bishops (8-9, 5-3) responded with eight straight points to take a 56-49 advantage at the 4:14 mark of the second half. The Bishops hit 8-of-13 free throws from that point to hold off the Quakers.
A. J. Sutherlin led the Quakers with 19 points, while grabbing five rebounds.
Kyle Calder tossed in 10 points and dished out three assists.
Shane Heidt finished with eight points and
Ryan Taylor topped the squad with six rebounds.
Quick start
Sutherlin gave the Quakers an early 5-0 advantage when he scored at the 17:27 mark of the opening period. The Bishops fought back to take the lead, but Sutherlin’s 3-pointer made it 8-6 with 14:47 on the clock.
Ohio Wesleyan eventually worked its way to a 26-10 lead with 6:20 left in the first half before the Quakers rallied to close the gap to 33-24 by intermission to set the stage for the second half.
The Quakers (3-14, 1-7) entertain Wittenberg University on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader where fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The NCAC game begins at 8 p.m.
