RICHMOND, Ind. — A difficult second half hurt the
Earlham College men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Quakers dropped a 69-52 decision to
Hiram College on
Schuckman Court in the Athletics and
Wellness Center.
The Quakers led 38-33 at halftime before Hiram scored the first dozen points of the second period to take a 45-38 lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference match up.
At that point from the perspective of the Quakers, a critical moment occurred when
Shane Heidt left the game with a mild concussion at the 15:10 mark
Justin Barger hit a 3-pointer for Earlham’s initial basket of the stanza to make it 45-41 with 14:14 left in the game. The Quakers were able to stay close until the Terriers (6-6, 3-1) were able to pull away in the final five minutes of the contest.
Despite playing just 16 minutes in the game, Heidt led the Quakers with 15 points.
A. J. Sutherlin added 13 points, while Barger finished with 12 points.
Marty Broderick, who had six points, topped the Quakers with seven rebounds and four assists.
Slow Start
The Quakers fell behind 11-4 early in the contest before mounting a rally ending with a 3-pointer by Sutherlin at 8:20 of the first half that tied the game at 25-25.
Earlham finished the period with a 13-8 run to build lead of five points by intermission before Hiram responded with its 12-point stretch at the start of the second half.
Next up for the Quakers (3-10, 1-3) is
Wabash College on Wednesday. The Little Giants visit
Richmond for a NCAC contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
