Earlham and Rose-Hulman Battle for Mutchner Cup

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.The Earlham College men’s basketball team dropped an 83-66 decision on Thursday to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the annual battle for the Mutchner Cup.

The Engineers (5-6) now lead the Mutchner Cup series 6-4, while Earlham still holds an overall advantage of 53-42. The Mutchner Cup is named after Earlham Hall of Fame member and former Rose-Hulman coach John Mutchner.

A. J. Sutherlin led the Quakers with 26 points, while Shane Heidt tossed in nine points. Justin Barger added eight points as he topped the Quakers with six rebounds. Sutherlin finished with five rebounds and Heidt had three assists. Kyle Calder also had three assists.

Rose-Hulman had an early lead, but the Quakers eventually tied the non-conference contest with a 3-pointer from Barger at the 12:06 mark of the opening period.

The game was tied three more times before Sutherlin drilled a 3-pointer to give Earlham a 19-16 advantage with 9:22 left in the first half.

The Engineers went back on top, but Sutherlin led the Earlham response with another trey to make it 22-20 at 7:05.

After Rose-Hulman grabbed a brief lead, Barger scored to put the Quakers in front for the final time of the night at 24-23 with 4:24 left before the end of the half.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Rose-Hulman finished the half with a 10-2 run to lead 33-26 at intermission.

Sutherlin nailed a 3-pointer to begin the second half to make it 33-29, but front that point the Engineers were able to pull away for the victory.

Earlham (3-6) entertain DePauw University Saturday afternoon on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. The non-conference affair gets underway at 2 p.m.
