CHICAGO, Ill. — Despite having four players in double figures on Sunday afternoon, the Earlham College men’s basketball team fell to Southwestern University 80-70 in the consolation round of the Midway Classic.
Shane Heidt topped the Quakers with 21 points and seven steals. For his efforts in the weekend contests, Heidt was selected as a member of the Midway Classic All-Tournament Team.
Kyle Calder added 13 points, while leading Earlham with eight rebounds and eight assists.

The first half was close with both teams holding leads. Earlham had a four-point advantage twice with the last time coming when Heidt hit a 3-pointer to make it 27-23 with 6:15 remaining in the period.
Southwestern (2-1) eventually worked its way to a 36-30 lead with 1:13 left in the half before the Quakers responded with six straight points to tie the contest at 36-36 by intermission.
Early in the second half, Calder gave Earlham a 39-38 lead with 17:17 left in the contest, but a 7-point run by Southwestern put the Quakers behind 45-39 at the 15:15 mark.
After Taylor drilled a 3-pointer to cut Earlham’s deficit to 51-50 at 12:34, the Quakers couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
Earlham (1-3) participates in the Rhodes College Classic this weekend as the Quakers travel to Memphis, Tenn. On Friday, Earlham plays the University of the South (Sewanee) at 6 p.m. The Quakers face the host school on Saturday at 4 p.m.
