CHICAGO, Ill. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team opened the Midway Classic on Saturday with an 84-71 loss to the University of Chicago.
The Quakers had four players reach double digits led by
Shane Heidt, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The contest was tight early with the Quakers leading briefly. Marsh tied the game at 6-6 at the 16:55 mark of the first half before Chicago (1-0) rallied to gain a slight edge.
Earlham was close a couple of times in the opening period with Heidt scoring at 10:08 to make it 19-15. Marsh then added a basket and a free throw to cut the deficit to 22-20 with 9:06 left in the half.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Chicago went on a 25-8 run to end the first half to build a 47-28 advantage by intermission.
In the second half, Earlham outscored Chicago 43-37, but the Quakers were only able to get within 11 points twice with the last coming with 10:10 remaining in the contest when Taylor drilled a 3-pointer.
Earlham (1-2) finishes the weekend in Chicago on Sunday against Southwestern University (1-1). The game begins at 2 p.m. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology defeated Southwestern 56-50 late Saturday night.
