Quakers Start Season at Home Against Franklin

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team opened it season on Friday night as the Quakers dropped a 69-54 decision to Franklin College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Charvonne Long led the Quakers with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Katy Buda added 13 points. Michelle Miranda  finished with five points. Jayana Sims contributed four rebounds.

The Quakers held a couple of leads early in the contest at 2-1 and 4-3 before the Grizzlies gained an edge. Midway through the first period Sims scored to cut the deficit to 17-15.

The contest remained tight and Franklin had a 24-22 lead late in the first half after Buda drilled a 3-pointer. The Grizzlies led 31-26 at intermission.

In the second half, Franklin (1-0) maintained its advantage and the Quakers were able to cut into the lead again when Nikki Darrett scored and then hit a free throw to make it 39-35. However from that point, Franklin went on a 10-4 run to build a 49-39 lead and take control of the contest.

Earlham (0-1) entertains Manchester College (0-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m. It will be the second game of the day in the Earlham Tip-Off Classic. Franklin faces Trine University (1-0) at 1 p.m. Trine defeated Manchester 48-35 in the second contest on Friday night.

Women's Basketball
Emily Sells scored 11 points against Transylvania University in an 84-80 loss on Feb. 1.

She posted team-high numbers with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Ryan Taylor led Earlham with 19 points against nationally-ranked Transylvania University as the Quakers fell 89-76 to the Pioneers, who are ranked 18th in the latest d3hoops.com poll .

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game was in Lexington on Feb.1.
