RICHMOND, Ind. — A rough first quarter was too much for the Earlham College College football team to overcome Saturday afternoon as the Quakers fell 42-3 to Wittenberg University at Darrell Beane Stadium.

The Tigers (5-0, 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference) scored four times in the opening period to lead 28-0. Wittenberg added two more scores in the second quarter for a 42-0 advantage at intermission.

Earlham’s Max Crumley-Effinger kicked a 41-yard field goal with 12:02 left in the third quarter, which turned out to be the only score for either squad in the second half.

The field goal was the 15th of Crumley-Effinger’s career, which is now at the top of Earlham’s all-time list. He passed Don Siler, who had 14 field goals from 1991-94. Crumley-Effinger also tied his mark from 2007 with his seventh field goal of the season.

Nick Cummings led the Quakers with 81 yards rushing.

Defensively, Cale Gulliford led the Quakers with eight tackles, while Ben Randall added seven. Adam LaFollette and Alex Painter each finished with six tackles. Painter added a sack and a fumble recovery. Neil Collins contributed with an interception.

Earlham (2-3, 0-2) is at Hiram College next Saturday. The NCAC contest gets underway at 1 p.m.
